Larry D. (Dell) Alexander;  Born May 30, 1953 in Dermott, Arkansas - is an American Artist and Author of Christian Literature.

Began drawing around the age of four. After graduating from Dermott High School in May of 1971, Alexander moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he studied Architectural Residential Design at Pines Vocational Technical School (now Southeast Arkansas Technical College).

His work is primarily influenced by his life experiences, of growing up in the rural south in the fifties and sixties, and perhaps, even more so, by his life in Detroit, Michigan in the seventies and early eighties. Alexander has been living and working in Texas (Irving 18 years & Grand Prairie 8 years) for the past 26 years.

He is best known for his “pen and ink” drawing style that he calls “crosshatching” that he used to create such popular fine-art drawings as “Renetta”, “Girl Friends”, “Cow Pasture”, and “My Kids” (Copyright #VA-664-679/Library of Congress). In 1991 Alexander had created his first lines of Greeting Cards in “Pen & Ink”, his earliest works using this method of “crosshatching”. (The Expressions Line, The Save the Children Line, The Feelings Line, and The Professions Line).

Some of his best-known paintings include, “The Jockey” (1997), “The Delta Series” (1998), “The Plum Picker” (1998), and the “Dermott Series” (1996). Six pieces from the Dermott Series are now a part of the permanent collection at the Southeast Arkansas Arts Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.  

Today his work can be seen in many places, throughout the United States. He perfers exhibiting his work in mainstream venues where it can be seen and shared with a variety of people from all walks of life. Places such as festivals, malls, libraries, banks, schools, and various art institutions, and, of course, on-line, are where one can most often see and purchase his artwork.

In 2001 he wrote his first book entitled “African-American History at a Glance”, which he also illustrated himself with his “Pen & Ink” drawings of various African-American heroes. This book was used to help create a supplemental text, which was put together to improve the American History curriculum in the Irving, Texas high schools in 2002. In May of 2006, he released his second book, which focuses on his calling by GOD, to teach the Holy Scriptures. It is entitled “Sunday school lessons from the book of the Acts of the Apostles”, the first of a trilogy released over a 12-month period. It was followed in October of 2006 with the second book of the trilogy, “Sunday school lessons from the Gospel according to John Mark”, with the third book, “Sunday school lessons from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans” released, in July of 2007. Alexander, a Deacon, and a bible teacher through his books, online weekly Sunday school lesson commentaries, which are based on the international Sunday school lessons, and his national e-mail system, also continues to be a prolific visual artist, as he does several art exhibits, juried shows, and print and book signings each year. He is currently a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas where the Rev. Wm. Dwight Mckissic Sr. is the pastor.

The “Arkansas Tour”:   Larry D. Alexander capitalized on the notoriety he received from the “Clinton Family Portrait” and started the “Arkansas Tour” in May of 1996 as a way to give back to his home state and be a blessing to the children of Arkansas. These annual visits to colleges, high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools, are intended to instruct and encourage children in pursuing their careers in the visual arts and to stay away from drugs. He has visited dozens of schools and talked to thousands of students over the past ten years in many Arkansas towns and cities. His tour traditionally ends with a two-day art exhibit and print signing at the Dermott, Arkansas Crawfish Festival.
